On the 4th December 1999, the label "Nautical Resort" was officially granted to Le Havre from the association France Station Nautique at the Salon de Paris; an acknowledgement of 165 years of quality yachting.

Le Havre enjoys a quality beach; it offers many nautical activities and events.

The marina holds 1.300 berths and many assets: located close to the city centre, and only 200 kilometres [125 miles] away from Paris; accessible 24 hours a day.

Le Havre, nautical resort, allows the practice of all the sports related to the sea. Le Havre is a hot spot in France, very fashionable thanks to the south and north-west prevailing winds which are perfect if you wish to practise kite boarding and windsurfing.

Water tourism plan

The city of Le Havre has stamped its maritime identity and plans to strengthen its image by launching a major water tourism plan which will give it 2000 mooring rings and a second marina in the Vauban basin by 2012.

The water tourism plan will improve the port's facilities and services to make Le Havre the region's hub for water activities. It has also received a government grant of 100,000 € for the Ministry for Sustainable Development's"Ports de plaisance exemplaires" projects.

In practical terms, the number of the marina's rings will increase from 1,150 to 1,300 by 2012. There will also be 250 extra rings in the Vauban basin. The second marina will be in this basin and will focus on long-term large units and turnaround points (which should be welcome news to English yachtsmen). Dependent on demand there could be 300 rings in addition to Vauban basin's facilities. A 7ha boat area by the Quai de l'Escaut will open in 2012. This technical area will provide a hibernation centre for 300 boats, a maintenance and repairs area (with waste water treatment) and pontoons for professionals. A boat chandler area is also planned. The plan's main focus is on the quality of the services available to yachtsmen. After providing a fuel supply pontoon and installing a self-service crane on Quai Tabarly, a second slipway for motor boats is planned along Augustin Normand harbour for 2012.
